Two Missing After Devastating House Fire in Queensland's Bundaberg Region
Two people remain unaccounted for following a devastating house fire that completely destroyed a remote property in Queensland's Bundaberg region. Emergency services responded to the blaze at Booyal Crossing Rd in Good Night Scrub around 9:15pm on Saturday, arriving to find the single-storey home fully engulfed in flames.
Dangerous Conditions Hamper Investigation
Queensland Police Chief Inspector Grant Marcus confirmed that a 75-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman who lived at the property are still missing. Investigators have been unable to safely access the severely damaged structure due to dangerous conditions.
"This is quite a dangerous type of environment for our investigators to work in," Marcus stated. "The building has been damaged significantly. So it's not a safe place for our investigators. They literally can't walk through the actual building itself."
Instead, authorities are using heavy machinery and elevated equipment, including cherry pickers, to reach parts of the scene. Part of the home has already been removed to allow investigators access, with more sections expected to be cleared in coming days.
Fire Ravages Rural Property
Nine fire crews battled the intense blaze for more than two hours before bringing it under control around 11:30pm. The roof collapsed during the fire, leaving the home in complete ruins. Before-and-after images show the scale of destruction, with a barbecue visible in earlier real estate listings completely destroyed in the aftermath.
The investigation remains in its early stages, with scientists and fire specialists working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Authorities are treating the incident as suspicious, which Marcus noted is standard practice until evidence suggests otherwise.
"It is still a crime scene. It is still under police guard," he emphasized.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Assistance
Additional detectives have joined the investigation, which is expected to take several more days at the scene. Police have received new information from members of the public that has assisted their inquiries.
"Overnight, we've received some additional information from the public which has certainly assisted us with our inquiries," Marcus said.
The missing pair are understood to be a couple who had lived at the property for an extended period. Officers remain in contact with their family as search efforts continue.
"We are working with the family ... to try and give them some peace of mind," Marcus explained.
Police are urging anyone with information or footage from the area to come forward as they continue their investigation into both the fire's cause and the whereabouts of the missing residents.
