The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) officially designated the low-pressure system as Tropical Cyclone Urmil on Friday afternoon local time, marking its intensification into a category one storm. This development has placed multiple countries and tourists on high alert across the Pacific region.
Current Location and Immediate Impacts
Positioned approximately 90 kilometers southwest of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, Cyclone Urmil is generating winds estimated at 75 kilometers per hour close to its center. Parts of central and southern Vanuatu are already experiencing heavy rainfall and strong, near gale-force winds, causing concerns for local communities and infrastructure.
Forecasted Movement and Strengthening
The system is currently tracking in a southeasterly direction, fueled by warm Pacific waters in the area. Meteorologists predict that Cyclone Urmil will reach category two strength by 5 PM local time, potentially increasing its destructive capabilities. Despite this, flights from Australia to Vanuatu on Friday have not been affected thus far.
Virgin Australia confirmed to media sources that their operations remain uninterrupted, with safety as their top priority. A spokesperson stated, "Our meteorology team will continue to closely monitor the weather system" to ensure passenger security.

The FMS noted that while the cyclone's center will remain distant from Fiji, associated rainbands and gusty winds are anticipated to affect parts of the country.
Looking ahead, Cyclone Urmil is forecast to continue moving south towards the North Island of New Zealand, though it is not expected to directly impact the island. This storm marks the first named system for the 2025–26 Tropical Cyclone Season, according to the FMS, signaling the start of what could be an active period in the Pacific.
