An urgent manhunt is underway in Western Australia's Mid West region for an armed gunman accused of shooting a woman near the town of Mullewa.
Alleged Shooting Sparks Major Police Operation
Western Australia Police allege that Kenneth John Giles, aged 58, shot a woman known to him following a dispute at a property on Urawa Road. The incident occurred approximately 24 kilometres north of Mullewa at around 5:20pm on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
The victim was transported to hospital via ambulance and is receiving treatment for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police say Giles fled the scene while in possession of a firearm. Authorities believe he is travelling in a white Nissan Patrol Utility with the Western Australian registration plate 1BIY336.
Community on High Alert as Tactical Teams Deployed
In response to the serious threat, WA Police have mobilised significant resources to the area, including the elite Tactical Response Group.
Residents of Mullewa and surrounding districts have been urged to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and report any sightings of Giles or his vehicle immediately.
Giles is described as being approximately 173 centimetres tall, with a medium build, brown hair, and brown eyes.
Dimitri Christoforou, owner of the Mullewa Railway Hotel, said the news was spreading quickly through the small community, causing concern. He was still serving customers on Wednesday evening but was considering locking the pub's doors as a safety precaution.
"All I know is there’s somebody running around with a gun," Mr Christoforou said. "We’ve got customers that have been coming in for dinner or buying drinks, I’m thinking about locking the doors just for safety reasons."
Public Urged to Assist Police
Police are treating the situation with extreme seriousness due to the accused being armed. The community is reminded not to approach Giles but to contact authorities without delay.
Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Kenneth John Giles is urged to call police immediately on triple-0 (000).
Mullewa is located roughly 450 kilometres north of Perth and 98 kilometres north-east of Geraldton, and is a region famed for its spectacular wildflower displays.
