Early morning chaos erupted on a major Melbourne highway after bricks were hurled from an overpass, damaging multiple vehicles and injuring a driver. The incident is one of two major stories unfolding, with extensive water searches for two missing men in Sydney now suspended.
Melbourne Highway Targeted in Reckless Attack
Five vehicles were struck and a driver was injured after bricks were thrown onto the Princes Highway at Springvale, in Melbourne's southeast. The dangerous act occurred around 1am on Thursday, causing significant damage and spraying glass fragments into one motorist's eyes.
Victoria Police confirmed that two of the cars sustained major damage when bricks smashed through their windscreens. The debris from the attack also punctured the tyres of numerous other vehicles travelling on the busy road.
Police Appeal for Information After Youths Spotted
Authorities are urgently seeking public assistance following the incident. Three youths were reportedly seen throwing the bricks from the overpass above the highway. As of Monday, no arrests have been made in connection with the reckless endangerment.
Police have released images of the damaged vehicles and are appealing to anyone with information, dashcam footage, or who witnessed the event to come forward to help identify those responsible.
Sydney Water Searches Halted for Missing Men
In a separate and grim development, two major search and rescue operations in Sydney have been called off. The searches were for a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man, both missing in separate water incidents.
The teenage boy disappeared after a small boat capsized in hazardous surf near the Barrenjoey Headland at Palm Beach around 11.30am on New Year's Eve. A 47-year-old man on the vessel died during the incident, while a 45-year-old man managed to scramble onto rocks and was rescued.
Extensive Efforts Fail to Locate Missing Swimmer
The following day, at Coogee Beach, emergency services were called after a 22-year-old man was seen struggling in the water. Despite immediate attempts to save him, he could not be found.
After days of extensive air, sea, and land searches involving multiple agencies, the active operations for both missing individuals have been suspended. Police stated that marine patrols will continue near Barrenjoey Headland and land patrols at Coogee will persist, but the large-scale search efforts have now concluded.
