Teen dies in tragic misadventure at Jerrabomberra swim spot

A tight-knit community south of Canberra is reeling after the tragic death of a local teenager in what New South Wales police have described as a fatal misadventure.

Emergency Response at Waterfall Drive

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Monday, January 20, 2026, near the popular Jerrabomberra Watering Hole, a swimming spot roughly a 15-minute drive from the nation's capital.

Emergency services, including two ambulance teams, multiple police vehicles, and a rescue unit, rushed to Waterfall Drive following reports a boy had suffered serious injuries at the base of a cliff.

A member of the public administered CPR before paramedics arrived, but despite these efforts, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Community Rallies in Grief

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Councillor Ross Macdonald told The Canberra Times that the Jerrabomberra community was feeling the loss deeply.

"I have no doubt that many people in the community, his family, his friends, his schoolmates, will be feeling this tragedy very deeply," Mr Macdonald said. He expressed confidence that the community would come together to support one another through an "unspeakably difficult time."

The councillor noted the area's natural beauty, which draws locals and Canberrans alike during the summer months. "It's very sad to know that for one young boy, he's lost his life doing what so many locals do and love," he added.

Outpouring of Support Online and Offline

Shock and condolences have flooded local social media groups, with residents expressing their devastation and offering support to the grieving family.

"I don't think there would be a household in Jerra not devastated from this tragedy," one person wrote in a community forum.

Another resident directly addressed the family, writing, "Please know, if you are reading this the conversations among the boys last night was about what a great kid your son was, and how he will be missed and remembered."

Some comments pointed out that this was not the first such incident reported in the area, highlighting the inherent risks of the natural environment.

Ongoing Investigation and Support Services

A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as a misadventure. Officers from the Monaro Police District are conducting inquiries, and a report will be prepared for the NSW Coroner.

Councillor Macdonald confirmed that local youth mental health service Headspace is aware of the tragedy and is ready to assist anyone in the community struggling with the news.

The Jerrabomberra Watering Hole remains a beloved local summer retreat, but this tragic event has cast a shadow over the region, prompting reflections on safety and community resilience.
