Mandurah's 21st Walk to Remember Unites Grieving Families

For more than two decades, heartbroken families and friends have gathered in Mandurah to walk and remember the children they have tragically lost. On Sunday, dozens of participants assembled at Dalrymple Park for the 21st Walk to Remember, hosted by The Compassionate Friends of Mandurah.

This annual community event serves a dual purpose: honoring children who have passed away and providing essential support for families living with loss. The Compassionate Friends Mandurah group, established in 2002, offers free grief support to families who have experienced the death of a child, regardless of age or cause.

Support Services and Memorial Events

Beyond regular support services, the organization hosts several memorial events throughout the year. These gatherings aim to bring families together, ensuring they know they are not alone in their grief. People traveled from across Western Australia to participate in the walk, with families arriving from distant locations such as Kambalda, Busselton, and Armadale.

Margot McAllister, a bereaved parent and grandparent from The Compassionate Friends, expressed her sentiments about the event. "It was heartwarming to see so many families joining together to support one another and those that were there for the first time being so warmly welcomed," she said.

McAllister emphasized the profound impact of such loss, stating, "This is the greatest trauma that a parent can endure. When the unthinkable happens, families are encouraged to please contact the group to speak to someone who can provide understanding and support."

Community and Political Support

Local MLA Rhys Williams attended the walk and delivered a speech before the march. He acknowledged the strength of the families involved and highlighted the importance of community support. "What these families have gone through is unimaginable," Mr. Williams remarked.

He further noted, "Events like this are incredibly important. Simply coming together as a community helps break the isolation that many families feel in grief and honors the memory of the children they love and miss."

The Walk to Remember stands as a testament to the resilience of grieving families and the power of community solidarity in times of profound loss.
