Whitford Lions Club Shatters World Record with Epic 102-Hour Bunnings Sausage Sizzle
The Whitford Lions Club has achieved a remarkable feat by raising a staggering $50,000 for mental health support services through an unprecedented 102-hour sausage sizzle held at Bunnings Joondalup. This marathon community event, which ran from 10am on Thursday last week until 4pm on Monday, has been hailed as a potential world record for its duration and impact.
Community Effort Sells Over 8,200 Sausages
With the dedicated support of numerous volunteers from the Lions Club and the broader community, the fundraiser sold more than 8,200 sausages during its continuous operation. The event featured a Snag and Collect drive-through service that operated through the night, ensuring sausages and drinks remained available even when the Bunnings store was closed to customers.
Organisers initially set a fundraising target of $20,000 but completely smashed this goal, raising more than $37,000 through sausage sales and generous donations. In a show of strong corporate support, Bunnings stepped in to round the total up to an impressive $50,000, significantly boosting the final contribution to mental health initiatives.
Proceeds to Fund Mobile Mental Health Van
All proceeds from this monumental barbecue effort will directly benefit the Lions Club's Beacon of Light program, an early intervention initiative designed to provide timely support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. The funds will specifically help launch the Beacon of Light's Mind Health Van, a mobile service that brings mental health support directly into local communities where it's needed most.
During the event itself, the Mind Health Van was stationed on-site, where approximately 50 people participated in meaningful 10-minute conversations with trained volunteers. Beacon of Light co-founder Derek Best, who has personal experience with the devastating impact of mental health struggles, emphasized the importance of these brief interventions.
A 10-minute conversation could change the path of someone's life, Mr. Best stated. With support from community groups alongside therapists, counsellors, psychologists and carers who volunteer their time, we target hotspots where people would benefit from meaningful conversations to help them navigate through their challenges.
High-Profile Support and Community Recognition
The record-breaking fundraiser received significant recognition from community leaders and officials. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch officially opened the event on Thursday, purchasing the first sausage and praising the volunteers for their extraordinary efforts.
I think our world could do with a lot more volunteers, Commissioner Blanch remarked. The work that the Lions Club does for our youth, for emergency aid, disaster relief, people with illnesses, and people with mental health issues is just amazing. I really appreciate their work because it's about getting in early, helping people early, and hopefully preventing any involvement with police whatsoever.
City of Joondalup Mayor Daniel Kingston also joined the fundraiser, congratulating volunteers on their achievement. The Lions Beacon of Light project does vital work providing early intervention mental health support to West Australians, Mayor Kingston said. This fundraiser will help launch their new Mind Health Van, bringing mental health support directly into our community.
Extraordinary Community Movement
In a heartfelt statement on Facebook, the WA Lions Club expressed profound gratitude and pride in the community's overwhelming response. This entire journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, the organization declared. What started as a wild challenge turned into a massive community movement. Every single person who showed up, donated, cheered, cooked, cleaned or shared the word made this possible.
The Whitford Lions Club's record-breaking 102-hour sausage sizzle represents more than just a fundraising achievement; it demonstrates the power of community collaboration in addressing critical mental health needs. Through sustained effort and widespread support, this initiative has created tangible resources that will directly benefit West Australians facing mental health challenges for months and years to come.
