The thunderous sound of air horns announced the arrival of the 2025 Illawarra Convoy, as hundreds of decorated trucks created a rolling symphony of support down Mount Ousley towards Shellharbour Airport.
Crowds gathered hours in advance along the M1 motorway, securing prime viewing spots for the beloved annual procession that represents one of the region's most significant community fundraising efforts.
A Legacy of Community Support
Since its inception in 2005, the Illawarra Convoy has generated more than $27 million for the Illawarra Community Foundation. These vital funds provide financial assistance and respite services for local families experiencing financial hardship due to life-threatening illnesses.
The foundation also supports other organisations with similar goals and helps purchase essential medical equipment for hospitals across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven Health District.
Community Spirit on Display
For many families, watching the convoy has become a cherished tradition. Alicia Flood brought her five and two-year-old children to the Mount Ousley Pedestrian Bridge for their first convoy experience.
"We're here to watch all the trucks come down and cheer them on," Flood said. "It's just the spirit of it, everybody together, cheering on the trucks and helping sick kids."
Natalie Musaik and her four-year-old son have attended multiple times to "support the trucks." She noted her son's enthusiasm for all things trucks, bringing his own toy truck to play with during the event.
Participants Share the Experience
This year's lead truck position went to Ross Transport, which secured the honour with an auction bid of $305,000.
Shane Daley returned to the motorbike convoy after a five-year absence, describing the experience as "beautiful." He spoke emotionally about the moment riders begin their journey and see children lining the roads.
"You see all the kids on the side of the road, it's gotta bring a tear to every bike rider's eye," Daley said. "You gotta do it for the kids, no one else can do it, so that's why you all get together and do it for them."
The convoy route began in Appin, winding through the region down Mount Ousley, passing BlueScope and continuing through Warilla before reaching its final destination at Shellharbour Airport.
Participants and spectators were rewarded with a free family fun day at the airport, featuring a performance by Australian rock legends The Screaming Jets, supported by Large Mirage and The Outlanders.
