Bunnings Provides Over $5000 in Security Equipment to South Australian Police for Domestic Violence Protection

In a significant community initiative, Bunnings has donated more than $5000 worth of security equipment to South Australian police to assist in protecting domestic violence victims within their homes. The donation has been instrumental in enhancing safety measures for vulnerable individuals across the region.

Police Sergeant's Mission to Keep Victims Safe

Brevet Sergeant Julie Jones, serving in a South Australian family violence unit, has dedicated her career to one fundamental principle: keeping people safe from domestic violence. Her role involves assisting victims, many of whom are women, within their homes while collaborating with child and family violence units. Sergeant Jones emphasizes that while numerous services exist to support victims, critical gaps remain in providing adequate security resources.

"My role in domestic violence is to keep people safe," Sergeant Jones stated, highlighting the seriousness with which she approaches her duties. "Our daily job is to assist victims of domestic violence within the home; the majority of them are females."

Bunnings' Practical Support Since 2024

The partnership between Sergeant Jones and Bunnings began in 2024 when she connected with store coordinators. Initially requesting specific items like window locks or door alarms for individual cases, she found Bunnings consistently willing to help. This collaboration expanded when Bunnings invited her to a regional coordinators' gathering, where they gifted her security cameras, window locks, and specially designed journals for victims.

"Bunnings do a lot for the domestic violence services where they help with these sorts of practical things," Sergeant Jones explained. "They put a lot of thought into making these journals for victims. Because sometimes it can be very difficult – but helpful – for victims to put the things they have been through into writing."

The journals feature an inspiring quote: "kind heart, fierce mind, brave spirit," offering emotional support alongside physical security. Sergeant Jones expressed deep gratitude, noting that Bunnings' contributions helped secure 30 women in the first year alone. Subsequent invitations in following years resulted in additional donations, cumulatively exceeding $5000 in value, with items including cameras and other security devices.

"Whenever I went to Bunnings and asked for help, for window locks or padlocks or cameras, I was never turned away," she added. Bunnings also assists domestic violence shelters by maintaining gardens, further enhancing safe environments.

Community Efforts Extend to Children's Charity Support

Beyond domestic violence initiatives, Bunnings supports broader community causes, such as fundraising for children's charities. South Australian truck driver Anthony Hill, part of Team Avengers for Variety Bash, has collaborated with Bunnings since 2016. His team, dressed as Avengers characters, raises funds for disabled children and Ronald McDonald House through events like barbecues.

"I'm fortunate enough not to have sick children or disabilities in my own family," Hill said. "I just felt that I was in a position to help other people, then that's what my role should be."

Driven by Christian values of helping others, Hill converted a food van during the COVID-19 pandemic to boost fundraising efforts. The proceeds support Variety children's charity, providing essential resources like wheelchair-accessible vehicles and school meals.

"We feed kids so they don't have to go to school hungry – and try to get through the school day on one piece of toast," Hill remarked, underscoring the tangible impact of these community partnerships.

Ongoing Commitment to Safety and Support

This initiative is part of the Back Australia series, supported by various Australian companies including Bunnings. The ongoing collaboration between Bunnings and local authorities demonstrates a robust commitment to addressing domestic violence through practical security solutions and emotional support. By filling resource gaps and fostering community resilience, these efforts contribute significantly to victim safety and well-being across South Australia.
