A single mother in Adelaide has expressed deep fear and insecurity in her own home after her beloved German shepherd was poisoned in what she suspects was a retaliatory act. Ashlyn Allen discovered her five-year-old dog, Wolf, dead in her backyard last Sunday, surrounded by what she described as blue pellets and Ratsak, a common rodent poison.
"He didn't die peacefully," Allen told 7NEWS, highlighting the traumatic nature of the incident. The poisoning occurred just days after Wolf was attacked by another dog that had wandered onto her property. Allen managed to intervene during that altercation, noting that Wolf, being a large dog, escaped with only minor injuries.
Escalating Threats and Retaliation Fears
Allen claims the same dog later lunged at one of her children, prompting her to report the incident to her local council. She now fears this decision triggered a revenge attack, leading to Wolf's death. "I didn't think it would result in my dog dying," Allen said, adding, "I just feel a lot of guilt."
Since Wolf's death, Allen has faced a series of alarming events that have compounded her distress. Her power was switched off, her mail was stolen, and her security cameras were tampered with. She also reported finding her sliding doors opened, suggesting an attempted break-in. "If you're willing to kill a dog... what else are you willing to do?" she questioned, underscoring the severity of the threats.
Legal and Financial Challenges
In South Australia, pets are legally classified as property, which means Allen is not eligible for financial support through Victims of Crime legislation. This has left her struggling to cope with the aftermath. To help her family relocate to a safer environment, she has launched a GoFundMe campaign, seeking community assistance during this difficult time.
Allen has now broken her lease and is preparing to move, driven by the ongoing harassment and her heightened sense of vulnerability. The incident has sparked concerns about pet safety and neighborhood disputes in Adelaide, highlighting the emotional and practical impacts of such crimes on families.
