An emergency warning has been issued for Victoria's north as an out-of-control bushfire burns through the region, posing a severe threat to local communities. Residents in Kerrisdale, Tallarook, and Trawool have been urgently warned to take shelter immediately as the fire travels from the Goulburn Valley Highway in a south-westerly direction.
VicEmergency has stated that individuals in these areas are in imminent danger and must act immediately to survive. The agency emphasised that the safest option is to take shelter indoors right away, as it is now too late to leave safely. For those in Kerrisdale, Strath Creek, and some parts of Tallarook, authorities advise leaving now before the fire grows too large and escape routes become compromised.
Current Firefighting Efforts and Conditions
CFA fire crews and aerial appliances, including aircraft, are actively fighting the blaze to contain its spread. Meanwhile, residents in Dairy Creek and Homewood are urged to stay alert and continuously monitor emergency warnings for updates on the evolving situation.
The emergency comes amid a total fire ban declared for most of Victoria on Tuesday, with temperatures forecast to reach 36 degrees Celsius. CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan highlighted the extreme fire risk, noting that very dry fuels across large parts of the state, combined with low humidity, mean fires can start easily and spread rapidly. He warned that any spark under these conditions has the potential to escalate into a serious incident, particularly with the threat of gusty winds or isolated thunderstorms.
