Child Survives Mulgrave Car Crash That Killed Driver, Police Launch Safety Operation

A young child has miraculously survived a car crash in Mulgrave, southeast Melbourne, that tragically killed the female driver. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, leaving a small white car mangled after it crashed into a tree on Police Road.

Emergency services responded to the scene around 3.40pm, where paramedics worked tirelessly but were unable to save the driver, who died at the location. A bystander quickly rushed to assist and found a child sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.

Child Pulled from Wreckage Unharmed

The child was carefully pulled from the wreckage and, following a thorough assessment by emergency personnel, was found to have escaped injury entirely. This remarkable outcome has been described as miraculous given the severity of the crash.

Victoria Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Authorities are urging anyone with information or footage related to the incident to contact Crime Stoppers immediately to aid their inquiries.

Operation Arid Targets Dangerous Driving

In response to ongoing road safety concerns, Victoria Police initiated Operation Arid the following day. This state-wide operation aims to curb dangerous driving behaviours and prevent serious injuries and fatalities on Victorian roads.

The operation will be in effect over the forthcoming Labour Day Weekend, which falls during March—a month historically associated with high rates of road trauma in Victoria. Assistant Commissioner Justin Goldsmith emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue.

"March continues to be associated with road trauma and we need to put a stop to it," Goldsmith stated. "We don't want to see another month with record numbers of collisions, so police will have a major presence on the state's roads this long weekend to ensure we don't have a repeat of this."

Alarming Road Statistics Highlight Need for Action

Recent data underscores the critical need for enhanced road safety measures. More than 1,600 collisions resulting in injuries were recorded across Victoria during the same month last year, with 23 of those incidents proving fatal.

So far this year, crashes on Victorian roads have resulted in 38 deaths. While this figure is notably lower than the 59 fatalities recorded over the same period in 2025, authorities stress that any loss of life is unacceptable and preventable.

Goldsmith further warned drivers about the risks of distraction, noting that "it only takes one second of distraction or to make a basic driving error that results in a collision." He urged all motorists to remain focused and alert while behind the wheel to help reduce the toll of road accidents.
