Robert Tripolino Returns to Perth Stage in Anastasia Musical as Charming Conman

Western Australian audiences last witnessed Robert Tripolino dominating the Crown Theatre Perth stage one year ago, portraying the crucified titular character in the Australian theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar. In a dramatic shift, Tripolino is now set to captivate crowds as Dmitry, the charming conman, in the first-ever Australian stage adaptation of Anastasia, with the official opening night scheduled for this Thursday in Perth.

A Stark Contrast in Roles and Performance

Promising significantly less bass guitar and bloodshed compared to his previous local performances, Tripolino's narrative flips from being the followed to the follower. "It's nice for Perth to see me not crucified this time," he humorously remarked. "It's really lovely to be able to play a character that is chasing, that has a plan and needs someone, and needs to follow that person. And then also, who is much more selfish in this story."

Brought to life on stage by the Tony Award-winning creative team of Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens, Anastasia follows the journey of Anya from Russia to Paris as she unravels the mystery of her past. While the story debuted on Broadway just nine years ago, many may recall the Oscar-nominated animated musical film adaptation from 1997 or its various fictionalized versions over the years.

Star-Studded Cast and Audience Perception Shifts

The production features Georgina Hopson in the lead female role of Anya, supported by Joshua Robson as Gleb, Rodney Dobson as Vlad, and acting veterans Rhonda Burchmore and Nancye Hayes as Countess Lily and Dowager Empress, respectively. Tripolino, who aids Anya in her arduous search, noted a shift in how audiences perceive villains and untrustworthy characters, with modern portrayals allowing more leeway for redemption.

"It feels like the narrative has shifted. No one likes to be fooled or tricked, we're all on our toes all the time in today's society," he observed. "I like taking the audiences on a ride with this character in particular, because you might start thinking one thing of him and you definitely think something completely different by the end. And that's a beautiful journey as an actor to get to portray every night."

Tour Details and Future Engagements

The Australian stage show tour of Anastasia launched in Melbourne in December, with upcoming performances scheduled in Adelaide, Sydney, and Brisbane later in 2026. In Perth, the musical will run until March 28, offering theatre enthusiasts a fresh take on this timeless tale. Tripolino's return to the Crown Theatre Perth marks a significant moment in local entertainment, blending classic storytelling with contemporary theatrical flair.
