The Illawarra community is mourning the loss of a true local legend, with tributes pouring in for broadcaster, writer, and passionate music advocate Ben Hession, who died last week after a months-long illness. He was 58.
A Pillar of Community Radio and Local Sound
Hession, who had lived with a heart condition for years, was the long-time voice behind the Australian Independent Music Show on Wollongong's community radio station VOX FM. His sudden passing has left a profound void in the city's cultural fabric, with colleagues and friends remembering him as a selfless and unwavering champion for local artists.
VOX FM secretary Lilian Wings said Hession was a cornerstone of the station for more than 34 years. "His voice, his vision, and his unwavering commitment shaped the station into a true community hub," Wings stated. "To those who worked alongside him, Ben was more than a colleague - he was a friend, a mentor, and a source of strength. He was one in a million."
The Unpaid Champion Who Launched Countless Careers
His dedication to the airwaves was a completely voluntary labour of love. For at least three decades, every Monday night at 10pm, Hession would be on air, rain, hail, or shine. "He pretty much gave up every Monday night of his life," said musician Griffin James, who once co-presented the show with him. James described Hession as "possibly the most unselfish person I've ever known."
This commitment had a tangible impact. Countless Wollongong bands received their first ever radio airplay or on-air interview through his show. Jeb Taylor, owner of local record store Music Farmers, confirmed there was "no bigger supporter of Australian music in Wollongong than Ben."
Beyond music, Hession's leadership at VOX FM was instrumental. He served on the board and as president multiple times, providing guidance through challenges. His dedication extended to supporting the station's 93 presenters, including 23 ethnic programs, believing deeply in the power of diverse voices.
A Quiet Presence with a Lasting Legacy
Those who knew him personally recalled a gentle, genuine soul. Neighbour James Corrick described him as "an awesomely lovely dude" who was quiet and softly spoken. At live music shows around Wollongong since the 1990s, Hession was a familiar figure, often standing near the back, greeting hundreds of people he knew with a warm smile.
His creative spirit extended beyond the microphone. Hession was also a published poet, with work featured in publications like Eureka Street and Mascara Literary Review, and he acted as a mentor to young writers.
Promoters Yours and Owls, who he supported from their beginnings, posted a tribute saying, "You came to every festival, interviewed what felt like every local band... You meant a lot to a lot of people and you will be dearly missed."
Lilian Wings perhaps best summarised the collective feeling: "The Illawarra has lost a remarkable man, but his voice, his poetry, and his passion will echo for years to come." Details for Ben Hession's funeral, to be held later this month, will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
