20-year-old percussionist Katrina Soares has been crowned the 2025 City of Joondalup Young Musician of the Year. The grand final, run by the Perth Symphony Orchestra, was held at Prendiville Catholic College on October 12, showcasing some of Western Australia's brightest emerging performers.
Katrina performed Blues for Gilbert, Suomineito and Asventuras on the vibraphone, captivating the audience and judges. Her win earned her a $2500 prize and an opportunity to perform with the Perth Symphony Orchestra in 2026.
Katrina, currently studying a Bachelor of Music at the University of Western Australia, said her music journey began at age four, taking up percussion in Year 8. She described the win as surreal and encouraged other young musicians to embrace opportunities.
Perth Symphony Orchestra creative director Fiona Campbell praised Katrina as a fully rounded musician with extraordinary technical capabilities and expressiveness. Second place went to violinist Aurelia Qaqish, and third to flautist Jensen Henkel.
The competition, supported by the City of Joondalup, aims to celebrate young musical talent in the local community. Councillor Adrian Hill noted the event's growth in its second year, reinforcing Joondalup's identity as a cultural hub.
