Radha Mitchell stars as Kris Hendricks, a former elite combat sniper turned single mother, in the Australian thriller "Seven Snipers." The film, directed by Sandra Sciberras and mostly shot around Ipswich, Queensland, follows Kris as she must rely on her old skills to protect her teenage daughter from a dangerous enemy.
Kris, once known as Voodoo Child, lives on a small farm with her daughter Anja (Annabel Woolf). On Anja's 16th birthday, a man named Phillips (Ryan Kwanten) arrives posing as a real estate agent, but Kris's survival instincts kick in. She quickly assembles old military comrades, including Milk (Ioan Gruffudd), White Dog (Damien Ryan), Kaldayev (Bianca Wallace), and Nico (Pacharo Mzembe), to face the Dragon (Tim Roth), an old enemy with a personal vendetta.
The cinematography by Andrew Conder is striking, making the bushland look crisp and threatening. However, the film feels stripped back, with limited character development and repetitive action sequences. The screenplay by Andrew O'Keefe could have benefited from more fleshing out of characters and backstory.
Mitchell delivers an excellent performance as a mother forced to confront her past. Roth is a chilling opponent, while Gruffudd and Kwanten fit seamlessly into the story. Despite its flaws, the film offers an unpretentious B-movie experience for those not overly concerned with character depth or believability.
