Santa Claus has begun his festive season visits across Australia, making a special stop at Wollongong Central this week. Families can meet him starting Saturday, with a preview on Thursday evening. The new grotto features a snuggly igloo designed to keep Father Christmas cool, complete with a calming soundtrack of natural glacier sounds.
Tim Buckley, the designer of Santa's temporary home, said the igloo is climate-controlled with air-conditioning to replicate the North Pole environment. The music, composed of ice and glacier sounds, is intended to soothe anxious children and create a healing atmosphere. Planning for the grotto began in July, with Buckley noting the hard work paid off at completion.
Santa will arrive in Wollongong for an evening parade on Thursday with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, landing at Crown Street Mall at 5:30pm. His throne will be ready for photos from Saturday November 12 on Level One of Wollongong Central, across from David Jones and Peter Alexander. Bookings are required via the centre's website.
