A 25-year-old man is in hospital with severe burns after being allegedly doused in petrol and set on fire at an apartment complex in Warrawong, a suburb of Wollongong. The incident occurred at 9pm on Monday at a unit block on Todd Street.
Emergency services found the victim with burns to his face, chest, neck, and arms, covering 50 per cent of his body. He was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition, where he is now listed as serious but stable.
Police arrested a 32-year-old man at Albion Park on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the attack. He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where inquiries are ongoing.
Lake Illawarra Police District Detective Chief Inspector Brad Ainsworth described the incident as a 'very violent, very direct attack.' He stated that a unit was forcibly entered, the occupant was doused in an accelerant, and then ignited.
Chief Inspector Ainsworth said it is unknown why the 25-year-old man was targeted. Police continue to examine the crime scene.
