Three Dead in Fiery Sydney Crash; Police Were En Route to Driver's Home

Three people have died in a horrific two-car crash in Sydney's south, with police revealing they were attempting to conduct a welfare check at the Audi driver's home just minutes before the incident.

Police attended a home on Second Avenue, Gymea Bay at 12:25am on Saturday following reports of a concern for welfare related to a mental health incident. A 42-year-old man left the home in a white Audi before officers could speak to him.

Shortly after at 12:30am, emergency services were called to Rocky Point Road at San Souci after reports of a crash. Police found that the same white Audi had rolled over a concrete barrier before landing on a blue Toyota sedan, which the ABC understands was likely a rideshare car.

The 42-year-old Audi driver died at the scene, as did the driver and passenger of the Toyota. Investigators have yet to formally identify the occupants of the Toyota.

Superintendent Graham Hibbs said officers believed the Audi was travelling at 'considerable speed' when the crash occurred. He said between 20 and 40 bystanders attempted to assist when one of the cars caught fire.

'We really feel for the families of all three persons who were involved in this incident and their loved ones,' he said. A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.
