US prosecutors have formally charged the man arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of veteran Hollywood actor James Handy with murder. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced on Thursday that Michael Gledhill, 44, who was taken into custody on Wednesday, faces up to 26 years in prison if convicted.
Arrest and Charges
Police reported that Gledhill, the son of Handy's girlfriend, approached officers near the crime scene in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles and confessed to the killing. Officers had been dispatched following a cryptic 911 call in which the caller stated, "I am the son of man. I just killed the man of sin."
Upon arrival, authorities discovered an 81-year-old man unconscious on the front lawn of his girlfriend's home, suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital. The victim was later identified as James Handy, a prolific character actor.
James Handy's Career
Handy was known for his supporting roles in films such as Brighton Beach Memoirs, Arachnophobia, Jumanji, Unbreakable, and Logan. His most recent appearance was in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, where he played an older bartender named Jimmy. He also appeared in numerous television shows dating back to the 1970s, often playing law enforcement or authority figures.
Investigation and Court Appearance
Police have described the killing as an isolated incident, but no motive has been provided. Gledhill, who resided at his mother's home, is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Friday. It is not yet known if he has obtained legal representation.
This case marks the second high-profile celebrity stabbing death in Los Angeles in six months. In December, actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, were killed at their Brentwood mansion. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
