The magic of Christmas is extending into the summer holidays for Canberra families, with a special child-friendly ballet production set to enchant the capital. The Australian Ballet's "Storytime Ballet: The Nutcracker" will perform at the Canberra Theatre Centre from January 8 to 11.
A Homecoming for a Canberra Dance Star
Adding a local touch to the festive production is former Canberran Paul Knobloch, who is the repetiteur for the touring show. Now 48, Knobloch began his dance journey at the Canberra Dance Development Centre before rising to become a soloist with the national company.
"It's always beautiful to be back on home soil and share what I do and what we do," Knobloch said. He emphasised the strong connection he maintains with his hometown, often visiting his old dance school to inspire current students.
"They're big supporters so they always come to see the ballet and there's always big cheers from the audience when we're there," he added, highlighting the community's enduring support.
The Perfect First Ballet for Young Audiences
Now in its tenth year, the Storytime Ballet series is specifically crafted to be an engaging and interactive introduction to classical dance for children. The performance runs for just under an hour, keeping young attention spans captivated.
A narrator guides the audience through the classic tale of young Clara's Christmas Eve adventure. She is whisked away to the glittering Land of Sweets, meeting iconic characters like the Sugar Plum Fairy, dancing snowflakes, and the mischievous Mouse King, all set to Tchaikovsky's famous score.
"It's a perfect introduction to ballet," Knobloch stated. He sees it as a privilege and a responsibility for the cast to help inspire future generations of dancers and theatre-goers.

The production is coming directly from a season at the Sydney Opera House. In Canberra, it will be staged in The Playhouse at the Canberra Theatre Centre.
