A cherished Cairns dance institution, tucked away in the suburb of Manunda, has just revealed a spectacular transformation following a significant six-figure investment. Backstreet Dance Studio, a local favourite for over a decade, has completed a major renovation and expansion, promising an enhanced experience for dancers of all ages and skill levels.
A Community Hub Transformed
The ambitious project, with a total investment exceeding $200,000, has fundamentally reshaped the studio's home at 99 Pease Street. The most striking change is the addition of a brand-new, second dance studio. This expansion effectively doubles the available floor space, allowing for more concurrent classes and providing much-needed room for the studio's growing roster of students.
Owners and directors Kirsty and Nicky Nucifora, who have been at the helm since 2013, spearheaded the revamp. The sisters recognised the need to evolve alongside their community's demands. "We've been in this location for 11 years, and it was time for a big change," they explained. The renovation wasn't just about adding square footage; it involved a complete internal overhaul to modernise the facility and improve functionality.
Modern Facilities for Aspiring Dancers
Every aspect of the original studio has been upgraded. Dancers now glide across new specialised sprung timber floors, which are easier on joints and provide better performance. The walls are lined with fresh, full-length mirrors, and the lighting system has been completely renewed to create a brighter, more professional atmosphere.
A new, high-quality sound system ensures every beat is heard with crystal clarity. Beyond the dance spaces, practical improvements include a renovated and enlarged waiting area for parents, updated change rooms, and a new retail section for dancewear. The studio's exterior also received attention with a fresh coat of paint, giving the entire building a vibrant new street presence.
Expanding Horizons and Class Offerings
This physical transformation is directly linked to an expansion of the studio's operations. With the new space, Backstreet Dance Studio is introducing a wider variety of classes to cater to diverse interests. The studio is renowned for its classes in jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, and contemporary, but the expansion allows for more specialised workshops and programs.
The studio caters to a wide demographic, from toddlers in "Tiny Tots" programs to teenagers and adults. The additional studio means popular class times can be expanded and waitlists reduced. The owners emphasised that their core mission remains unchanged: to provide a welcoming, inclusive, and non-competitive environment where students can build confidence, fitness, and a love for dance.
The renovation positions Backstreet Dance Studio for its next decade of operation in Manunda. It stands as a significant investment in local arts infrastructure in Cairns, ensuring that passionate dancers in Far North Queensland have access to top-tier facilities close to home. The studio's revival is a testament to the enduring vibrancy of the local arts scene and the commitment of small business owners to their community.
