Ruby Rose Accuses Katy Perry of Sexual Assault, Singer Denies as 'Reckless Lies'
Australian actress and model Ruby Rose has made serious allegations against US pop star Katy Perry, claiming Perry sexually assaulted her in a Melbourne nightclub two decades ago. The singer has since categorically denied the accusations, labeling them as "reckless lies" in a strongly worded statement.
Allegations Made on Social Media Platform Threads
The Orange Is the New Black star made the claims on Threads in response to an article about Perry's reaction to Justin Bieber's headline act at the Coachella music festival. On April 13, Rose posted, "Katy Perry sexual assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s**t what she thinks."
In another reply, the 40-year-old actress provided graphic details about the alleged incident, stating it occurred 20 years ago. She wrote, "She didn't kiss me. She saw me 'resting' on my best friends lap to avoid her and bent down. Pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting vagina on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomitted on her."
Katy Perry's Team Issues Strong Denial
In a statement shared by People magazine, Perry's representatives said the allegations are "categorically false." Her rep stated, "The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies. Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named."
Background of Ruby Rose's Previous Claims
In May 2020, after exiting the Batwoman series, Rose came forward with several allegations about unsafe working conditions on set. Warner Bros. TV, which produced the show, and a former co-star released statements refuting Rose's claims, while other cast members voiced their support for the show at the time.
Some Threads users speculated that Rose was making the allegations about Perry due to an ongoing feud between the pair, which started in 2017 after she criticized Perry's song Swish Swish. Others who believed the allegations praised Rose for speaking out.
Rose's Statement on Social Media and Police Report
Rose also stated in the past she has "lashed out" on social media, without providing further details of the alleged incidents. On Threads, she continued, "I needed to protect myself. As I don't have a family or large support system. But I know I am not helping myself or other survivors by continuing this survival technique."
She added, "Today I will be walking into a police station to see if any of my experiences can be investigated. I imagine they are past their statute of limitations, but all the more reason to try. I have a long list, it will probably take more out of me than I'm prepared for, but I will come back here to update others on the process, as soon as I am ready." Later, she posted, "I did it."
