Prince Harry and Meghan Touch Down in Melbourne for Australian Tour
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have arrived in Melbourne, marking the beginning of their four-day Australian tour. The couple landed at Tullamarine Airport around 6:30 am on Tuesday aboard a Qantas flight, much to the surprise of their fellow passengers who were unaware of their presence until disembarking.
Surprise Arrival and Passenger Reactions
One passenger recounted the unexpected encounter, stating, "I was sitting right in front of them and I didn't even know. Well until we got off the plane, was when we turned around and that was them. In LA you see it all the time though so you're kinda used to it." Another passenger noted that Harry appeared remarkably refreshed after the long-haul flight, commenting, "I've never seen anybody look so refreshed getting off a flight from the US, (Harry) looked great. I think he was dressed in chinos and a nice pressed shirt, but I didn't see Meghan though."
The presence of numerous Qantas staff hinted at special passengers onboard, though the couple's identities remained a secret until departure. Seated in business class, Harry and Meghan exited the plane and were swiftly transported in a convoy on the tarmac to their hotel, avoiding public attention upon arrival.
Tour Itinerary and Key Events
The couple's schedule in Melbourne includes several significant visits:
- Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital
- Australian National Veterans Arts Museum
- Whitten Oval, headquarters of AFL club the Western Bulldogs, for a Movember event
Following their time in Melbourne, Prince Harry will travel to Canberra to:
- Visit the Australian War Memorial
- Meet with Indigenous veterans
- Attend an Invictus Australia reception
- Participate in the daily Last Post Ceremony
He will then return to Melbourne for a guided cultural walk, visit a mental health charity, and deliver the keynote speech at the InterEdge Summit. The tour concludes in Sydney, where the duke and duchess will sail around the city's famous harbour with Invictus Australia and attend the Super Rugby Pacific clash between NSW Waratahs and Moana Pasifika.
Background and Previous Visit
This visit marks the couple's first return to Australia since their 16-day tour of the Pacific in 2018, shortly after their wedding. In 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step back as senior members of the British royal family to pursue financial independence. They retained their titles but are no longer working members of the royal family. The pair have two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The Australian tour highlights their ongoing involvement with charitable causes and veteran support, particularly through the Invictus Games foundation, reflecting their commitment to public service despite their changed royal status.
