Meghan Markle's $420 gift to superfan sparks backlash

Meghan Markle has sparked backlash after sending a US$300 (AUD$420) 'thank you' package from her lifestyle brand, As Ever, to a superfan who has openly criticised the Princess of Wales.

The fan, who goes by the name of The Notorious JTB on social media, said he was 'completely stunned' to receive the box of products and a handwritten note from the Duchess of Sussex, 44.

Sharing an 'unboxing' video to X on Monday, JTB said: 'The Duchess sent me a gift. I am not exaggerating when I say this was nowhere on my 2026 bingo card. Completely stunned. Completely grateful. Thank you, Meghan.'

In the video, JTB opened the box to reveal that Meghan had sent him As Ever's newly released matchbox, along with four candles, a leather bookmark, honey, and a tin of flower sprinkles. According to the products listed on As Ever's website, the total cost of the care package exceeded US$300.

JTB then held up Meghan's handwritten note, which was sealed with the duchess' royal monogram. 'Dear JT, Thank you for the anniversary wishes! A few treats for you to enjoy. As ever, Meg,' it read.

JTB regularly praises Meghan to his 9,000 followers and shows off his latest purchases from As Ever. Most recently, he spent US$256 (AUD$356) on As Ever's Signature Scent Collection, which contains four candles inspired by Meghan, Prince Harry, 41, and their two children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, four. The social media user also spent more than US$200 (AUD$280) on Meghan's wine.

He has been accused of berating those who speak out against Meghan and has made controversial comments about members of the Royal Family. In February, JTB said Prince William and Princess Kate had 'zero backbone' when they released a statement about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and has slammed the Royal Family for their handling of the scandal.

'Future king & queen. Zero backbone. That 'statement' was a royal copy & paste,' he said. JTB later reposted a tweet calling Princess Kate 'mediocre' after she visited Reggio Emilia to learn about the Italian city's approach to early years development. He also claimed that, after 20 years in the Royal Family, the future Queen 'still has no identity'.

Some people have disapproved of Meghan sending her products to someone who has been so openly critical of her in-laws, with many saying that it 'is not a good look'.

'Meg fraternising with her stans who also talk loads of s*** about the Royal Family isn't a good look,' one person fumed on Twitter. 'For years, Meghan has claimed she doesn't read social media and isn't aware of the conversations happening online about her,' another chimed in. 'Yet somehow she managed to find one of the most hateful anti-Royal Family accounts on X, send a gift and include a personal handwritten note.'

A third questioned whether Meghan 'knows how bad this looks', writing: 'Let's do the math…you trash and abuse her in-laws and she thanks you…got it.'

Meanwhile, others were touched by Meghan's 'thoughtful' gesture and said JTB 'deserved it' for being such a loyal supporter. 'Well deserved, not only do you support her online, but you also buy a lot from As Ever, just what you've spent on wine alone is huge... I love this for you,' one person said. 'Oh goodness, how thoughtful of her and well deserved,' echoed another.
