Rosie O'Donnell's Prison Visit with Daughter Cut Short by Tornado Warning
Rosie O'Donnell's Prison Visit Cut Short by Tornado

Comedian Rosie O’Donnell has opened up about the heartbreaking moment her long-awaited prison reunion with her daughter, Chelsea, was abruptly halted by severe weather. The former talk show host detailed the anxiety she felt before visiting Chelsea, who is incarcerated, and described the emotional visit itself.

Visit Cut Short by Tornado Warning

O’Donnell said the reunion, initially scheduled to last four hours, was ultimately cut short due to a tornado warning. In a post on Substack, she wrote about her complicated feelings as she prepared to see Chelsea, whom she adopted with then-partner Kelli Carpenter shortly after her birth in 1997.

“I’m going to visit her soon,” O’Donnell shared. “I have tried to prepare myself, I know it will be difficult but I must, as she asked me to. A first for her at 28 years old.”

Inside the Prison Visitation Room

In an Instagram post, O’Donnell described the prison visitation room, which she likened to a children’s nursery with Disney murals on cement walls and vending machines. She was instructed to sit at Table 8 in a red chair, while beige chairs were reserved for inmates. The guard explained the rules.

O’Donnell, who has been candid about her daughter’s battle with addiction, said Chelsea was the first inmate to enter the visiting area. “My heart skips a beat, she looks good,” O’Donnell wrote. “Healthy, calm, rested blue eyes, clear skin, in her green uniform.”

Emotional Reunion Interrupted

Chelsea, a mother of four, has not received visits from her children, which O’Donnell said has been difficult. As the sky outside darkened ominously, O’Donnell felt herself sweating and splashed cold water on her face. Tears fell from her eyes as she tried to shake the sadness.

But shortly after she returned, the visit came to an abrupt end. “The guard announces we must leave as a tornado has touched down nearby,” O’Donnell said. “The visit is cut short, Chelsea slumps in her chair. Crestfallen — we are rushed out, a quick hug and I’m back in the car.”

Processing the Visit

O’Donnell said the storm continued all the way back to her hotel, where she took time to process the visit. “Unconditional love simply the only way through motherhood, love and forgiveness a must,” she ended her post. “Even when it seems impossible, especially then we live, we learn, we grow. Even at 64.”

Background on Chelsea’s Legal Troubles

Court documents obtained by TODAY revealed that Chelsea’s probation was revoked and she was sentenced to prison in October last year by the Marinette County Wisconsin Circuit Court. She had been arrested three times on charges involving felony child neglect and drug possession. In November 2024, she was arrested on two felony counts of possession of methamphetamine, one felony count of possession of narcotic drugs, and two felony counts of bail jumping.

In a statement to People magazine, O’Donnell expressed compassion for her daughter and others battling addiction. “It has been a painful journey for her and her four young children,” she said. “We continue to love and support her through these horrible times. Prayers welcomed.”
