Newcastle Herald Story Competition Opens for Entries

The Newcastle Herald short story competition is now open for entries, inviting writers in the Hunter region to craft a 1000-word story inspired by one of six images selected by Herald photographers. The images include a playful dolphin, a derelict building, and racing pups.

Stories can be of any genre but must be original and draw inspiration from one of the six images. Entries must specify which image inspired the tale and be between 900 and 1000 words. The competition is open to Hunter residents aged 18 and over, with a limit of one story per person.

Judges include Miles Franklin-shortlisted author Dr Ryan O'Neill, Kathy Sloss from MacLean's Booksellers, Hunter Writers Centre director Katherine McLean, ACM head of publishing Chad Watson, Herald senior deputy editor Matt Carr, and editor Lisa Allan.

Prizes include vouchers from MacLean's Booksellers and Harvey Norman, as well as VIP double passes to the opening night of the 2026 Newcastle Writers Festival. Entries must be emailed to storyprize@newcastleherald.com.au with a cover sheet containing the author's name, address, email, and phone contacts.
