Cottesloe Dentist Turns Romance Author at 60 with Debut Novel 'A Little Bit Country'
Dentist Becomes Romance Author at 60 with Debut Novel

From Dental Practice to Publishing: A Late-Blooming Literary Success

For the majority of her professional life, Jacinta Peachey never imagined herself as a writer. The Cottesloe resident spent decades as a dentist, running her own clinic in Midland, with her writing limited to clinical referrals and routine emails. The notion of crafting a novel seemed entirely foreign to her.

Now, at 60 years old, Peachey has not only written her first book but has seen it published, marking a dramatic career transformation. Her debut romance novel, A Little Bit Country, was officially released this week, with two more books already in the pipeline.

A Health-Driven Career Shift

Peachey's journey from dentistry to authorship began in 2018 when worsening arthritis forced her to reconsider her career. "I realised my condition was getting worse," she explained. "I sold my practice that year but stayed on until the COVID period. Ultimately, I knew I couldn't continue and made the difficult decision to leave."

Facing early retirement, Peachey found herself at a crossroads, uncertain about how to fill her days productively. It was during this transitional phase that a casual conversation sparked an unexpected creative awakening.

The Spark of Inspiration

"I was bored one day talking to a friend on the phone," Peachey recalled. "She was describing her efforts to refurbish her parents' hotel in the South West region. Suddenly, this idea came to me: when life seems terrible, that's when you might meet the man of your dreams."

That fleeting thought evolved into a brief synopsis about a woman meeting her future husband while renovating a hotel. Although the story didn't materialize in real life for her friend, it planted the seed for Peachey's writing career. "My friend read it and said, 'This is really good. You should write a story.' I thought to myself, maybe I could. Maybe this is what I do when I retire."

Learning a New Craft

With no formal writing background beyond clinical correspondence, Peachey embarked on a journey of self-education. "As a dentist, my extent of writing was the odd email about Joe Bloggs and his wisdom teeth... so not very creative," she said with a laugh. "I had to learn how to write creatively, as well as how to structure a book."

She immersed herself in online writing classes and joined local writers' groups, absorbing knowledge from experienced authors. A significant turning point came when she became a member of Romance Writers of Australia, a volunteer-run organization with approximately 800 members nationwide.

"That was a fabulous support system for me," Peachey emphasized. "Through them, I slowly started entering contests, volunteering, and participating in chat rooms. The community became essential to my development."

Award-Winning Recognition

Peachey's dedication paid off when her manuscript for A Little Bit Country earned prestigious accolades. The novel won the First Kiss Award from Romance Writers of New Zealand and the Ripping Start Award from Romance Writers of Australia.

These honors caught the attention of publishers, leading to a three-book deal with US-based Tule Publishing in 2024. "Looking back on it now, it's insane to think that I was able to do that," Peachey reflected on her rapid success.

The Story Behind the Novel

A Little Bit Country serves as the first installment in Peachey's Outback to the Sea series, set in the fictional coastal town of Dolphin Cove in Western Australia's South West region. Drawing inspiration from her original synopsis, the narrative follows Jasmine Kennedy, who escapes the outback for a fresh start in Dolphin Cove.

There, she encounters Ben Stewart, a local handyman rebuilding his life after losing a leg in an accident. When their paths cross again following a brief initial meeting, both characters must confront their pasts and decide whether they're prepared to risk love.

"I read a lot of small-town romance, and I quite liked the world-building element of it," Peachey noted. "I also visit Dunsborough frequently, so that area became an inspiration when creating the small-town environment and its inhabitants."

Overcoming Self-Doubt

Despite her achievements, Peachey admitted to grappling with insecurities throughout the writing process. "I have this vague memory of feeling out of my depth as a young dentist, but I hadn't experienced that uncertainty for years," she shared. "When I started writing, even as an older woman, that sort of insecurity or imposter syndrome crept back up. Writing your own book can be a very lonely endeavor, so having the support of other writers proved invaluable. I wouldn't have reached this point without them."

What's Next for the Author

The e-book version of A Little Bit Country launched on Amazon this week, with physical copies scheduled to arrive in Perth bookstores in the coming weeks. The second novel in the series, A Little Taste Home, is set for release on September 16, while a third title is planned for February 2027.

"I'm nervous about this new chapter," Peachey confessed. "It represents a significant change, but it's one I'm incredibly excited about. This is just the beginning of my story as an author."

From dental tools to keyboard keys, Jacinta Peachey's remarkable transformation demonstrates that creative passions can blossom at any stage of life, proving that sometimes the most compelling stories emerge from unexpected beginnings.
