The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge has been awarded the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026, securing a £120,000 prize. The museum was recognized for its outstanding achievements in public engagement, digital innovation, and inclusive programming.

A Landmark Achievement for the Fitzwilliam

This year's award, announced on June 24, 2026, marks a significant milestone for the Fitzwilliam, which has undergone a major transformation in recent years. The museum impressed judges with its bold exhibitions and community-focused initiatives, including a series of projects that brought art to underrepresented audiences.

According to Jenny Waldman, director of Art Fund, the Fitzwilliam stood out for its "imaginative and impactful approach to making art accessible to all." She added, "The museum has set a new standard for how cultural institutions can engage with their communities."

Community and Digital Innovation

A key factor in the Fitzwilliam's victory was its groundbreaking digital outreach. The museum launched a virtual tour platform that attracted over 500,000 online visitors in 2025, allowing global audiences to explore its collections. Additionally, its "Art for Everyone" program provided free workshops and resources to local schools, reaching more than 10,000 students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The museum also partnered with local artists to create site-specific installations that reflected the diversity of Cambridge. One notable project, "Voices of the City," featured works by 20 community artists and drew record attendance.

Competition and Impact

The Fitzwilliam triumphed over four other shortlisted museums: the Hepworth Wakefield, the National Museum of Scotland, the Museum of Liverpool, and the Turner Contemporary in Margate. Each finalist received a £15,000 prize, with the winner taking the top award.

Director Luke Syson expressed his delight at the recognition, stating: "This award is a testament to the hard work of our entire team and the support of our community. We are committed to continuing our mission to inspire and educate through art."

The Art Fund Museum of the Year is the largest museum prize in the UK, celebrating excellence in museums and galleries. Past winners include the V&A Dundee and the Science Museum Group. The prize money will support the Fitzwilliam's upcoming exhibition program and educational outreach.
