Billy Crystal Delivers Heartfelt Tribute to Rob Reiner at Oscars Memorial

The glitz and glamour of Hollywood's biggest night took a solemn turn as the Oscars ceremony paused for a deeply moving In Memoriam segment, honouring the stars who died over the past year. Actor and comedian Billy Crystal led the emotional tribute, focusing on his dear friend, the legendary actor and director Rob Reiner.

A Personal and Poignant Remembrance

Billy Crystal, who starred in Reiner's beloved romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, shared intimate memories from their long friendship. "Rob told me that it meant everything to him that his movies meant something to you," Crystal said, his voice filled with emotion. "And for us, who had the privilege of knowing him and working with him, and loving him, all we can say is 'buddy, what fun we had storming the castle.'" This poignant reference to Reiner's classic film The Princess Bride resonated deeply with the audience.

Crystal was one of the first individuals on the scene when the bodies of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were discovered at their home in December. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the tragic incident.

Celebrating a Storied Career

During his tribute, Crystal highlighted Reiner's impressive filmography, which includes timeless classics such as Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. "My friend, Rob's movies will last for lifetimes," Crystal affirmed. "Because they were about what makes you laugh and cry, and what we aspire to be." Following his speech, the curtain drew back to reveal actors like Demi Moore and Meg Ryan, both of whom have appeared in films directed by Reiner, adding a visual homage to his impactful career.

Honouring Other Hollywood Icons

The segment then transitioned into a montage featuring other notable figures from the entertainment industry who passed away in the previous year. Actress Rachel McAdams took the stage to pay tribute to two iconic stars, Catherine O'Hara and Diane Keaton.

McAdams, who played Keaton's daughter in The Family Stone, remembered the Oscar-winner as a "legend." "For over 50 years, luminous on screen and indelible in life, believe me when I say there isn't an actress of my generation who is not inspired by and enthralled with her absolute singularity," McAdams said. She noted Keaton's multifaceted roles as an actress, artist, author, and activist, but emphasized that "no hat more important to her than being a mother to her two children."

McAdams also honoured Catherine O'Hara, describing her as a "comedic genius and scene stealer" who "made us laugh until we cried." Diane Keaton died of pneumonia in October, while O'Hara passed away three months later from a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in her lungs.

Barbra Streisand's Tribute to Robert Redford

Adding to the emotional weight of the evening, singer and actress Barbra Streisand delivered a poignant tribute to her The Way We Were co-star, Robert Redford, who passed away in September 2025 at the age of 89. Following a heartfelt speech about their enduring friendship and his illustrious career, Streisand performed a stirring rendition of the iconic theme song from their 1973 film, bringing many in the audience to tears.

The Oscars In Memoriam segment served as a powerful reminder of the lasting legacy these Hollywood legends have left behind, touching hearts with personal stories and celebrated achievements.
