Tragic Drowning Claims Life of Young International Student on Gold Coast
A 20-year-old international student from the Philippines, Karlo Bul-Anon, has tragically drowned off Main Beach on the Gold Coast in Queensland. His body was discovered around 1.40pm on Wednesday, following his disappearance in the water the previous day.
Dreams Cut Short in a Simple Swim
Bul-Anon arrived in Australia in late 2024 with aspirations to build a better future for himself and his family. According to family friend Alfreda Camasura, who spoke on a GoFundMe page, his family had made significant financial sacrifices to support his education and dreams in Australia.
"What was meant to be a simple swim turned into a tragedy," Camasura wrote. "He drowned, and just like that, the young man full of dreams and love was taken too soon. No goodbye. No last embrace. Only silence."
Remembered for Kindness and Determination
Bul-Anon was described as a hardworking individual who balanced his studies with long hours of employment, often battling homesickness and exhaustion in silence. Camasura noted that he persevered through difficult times, motivated by his love for his parents, brother, and family.
"He studied hard. He worked long hours. He endured homesickness in silence," she said. "There were nights he felt tired and alone, but he never gave up. Whenever he felt weak, he reminded himself why he started — for his family."
He is remembered for his kindness, humility, and unwavering determination, qualities that left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Community Mourns the Loss
A man claiming to be Bul-Anon's flatmate expressed shock and disbelief over the incident, recalling their last interaction before the tragedy. "He even said 'God bless and take care' when I left home that day," he wrote in a social media post. "I will miss you and the house won't be the same again without hearing your voice while you are playing computer games whole day."
Additionally, a business where Bul-Anon worked paid tribute online, mourning the loss of a "beloved crew member." The company described him as a kind soul and hardworking friend who brought positivity to the team.
Family Seeks Assistance for Repatriation
Bul-Anon's family is now faced with the overwhelming financial burden of repatriating his remains to the Philippines. Camasura emphasized the need for community support during this time of grief.
"The financial cost of repatriating his remains from Australia is overwhelming, and in this time of unimaginable grief, they cannot carry this burden alone," she wrote. "To anyone willing to extend financial assistance, any amount — big or small — will be deeply appreciated. Your generosity will help bring their beloved son home so he can finally rest in the arms of the land and the people who love him most."
The GoFundMe page has been set up to facilitate donations and support the family in their efforts to bring Karlo Bul-Anon back to his homeland.
