Major drug seizure in Newcastle after police spot suspicious man
Strike force detectives from the Hunter Region Enforcement Squad have made a significant arrest in Newcastle, following the discovery of a large drug stash in a hotel room. The incident unfolded on Hanbury Street in Mayfield, where police observed a man behaving in a manner they described as suspicious.
Foot chase leads to arrest and initial findings
On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, just after 12:30 pm, officers were patrolling the area when they noticed the individual. As police approached, the man allegedly attempted to flee, sparking a brief foot pursuit. The 40-year-old was quickly apprehended and taken to Newcastle Police Station for processing.
During a search, authorities allegedly found 42 grams of a white crystal substance, along with $3,845 in cash on his person. This initial discovery prompted further investigation by the strike force, which had been established in March 2026 under the name Strike Force Norlita to target commercial drug supply in the Mayfield region.
Hotel room raid uncovers extensive drug cache
Later that day, at approximately 5:15 pm, detectives executed a raid on a hotel room located on Hanbury Street. The search allegedly revealed a substantial haul of illicit substances, including 717 grams of methylamphetamine, 215 grams of GHB, and 0.7 grams of heroin.
In addition to the drugs, police reported finding digital scales, $5,850 in cash, resealable bags, and capsicum spray. These items are commonly associated with drug distribution activities, according to law enforcement officials.
Charges laid and bail denied
The man has been charged with multiple offences, including three counts of drug supply, two counts of dealing with property proceeds of crime, two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, and one count of possessing or using a prohibited weapon. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Police have confirmed that inquiries under Strike Force Norlita are ongoing, as they continue to investigate the broader network of drug supply in the area. This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by authorities to combat illegal drug activities in Newcastle and its surrounding communities.
