A 15-year-old boy, the son of the owner of one of Western Australia's largest adventure travel companies, has drowned in the remote Kimberley region. Jack Avenell's body was recovered from the Prince Regent River, approximately 250 kilometres north-east of Derby, shortly after 3 pm on Thursday. Despite immediate efforts, the teenager could not be revived.

Jack Avenell is the son of Chad Avenell, the owner and managing director of True North Adventure Cruises, which operates itineraries along the Kimberley coastline, including the Prince Regent River. It is understood that Jack was participating in a True North cruise when the tragic accident occurred. A spokesperson for True North expressed deep sorrow, stating, "A tragic accident occurred during a Kimberley excursion on Thursday 16th April 2026, resulting in the death of a teenager. We are grateful for the efforts of the crew, emergency services, and those present in responding to the accident. Our focus is now on supporting the family, whose loss is immeasurable."

Family and friends have shared heartfelt tributes to Jack on social media platforms. His sister, Lily Avenell, posted on Instagram, "Forever 15 and forever my little brother, we love you Jacky." Harry Howson, son of True North co-owner Craig Howson, wrote, "You have always been a little brother to me. Those 15 years with you will never be forgotten and I will always cherish what we had. The only thing that is getting me through this is knowing that you were doing something you LOVED, being on True North surrounded by people that you loved and loved you."
