EU's New Entry/Exit System (EES) Begins: Share Your Experience

The European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES) has officially launched, replacing manual passport stamping with an automated electronic system for non-EU travellers. The system, which applies to all visitors from outside the Schengen Area, including UK citizens, records the traveller's name, travel document type, biometric data (fingerprints and facial image), and the date and place of entry and exit.

How the EES Works

Upon arrival, travellers must scan their passport at a self-service kiosk, provide fingerprints, and have their photo taken. The system then registers the entry. When leaving the Schengen Area, a similar process records the exit. The EES aims to enhance border security, prevent overstays, and streamline border checks.

Impact on Travellers

The new system may cause longer queues initially as travellers and border staff adjust. However, once operational, it is expected to speed up border crossings for frequent visitors. The EES also means that passports will no longer be stamped, which could affect travellers who previously used stamps as proof of travel history.

According to the European Commission, the EES is a key component of the EU's Smart Borders initiative, designed to modernise external border management. It will apply to all non-EU nationals, including those from the UK, who are now third-country nationals after Brexit.
