New Trail Guide and App Unveiled for Bindjareb Geopark in Peel Region

A comprehensive trail guide and mobile application designed to make the natural attractions of the Peel region more accessible have been officially launched. The Bindjareb Geopark trail guide and mobile app, which debuted on April 15, aim to celebrate the area's distinctive geology, cultural heritage, and natural environment.

Development and Partnerships

These resources were developed by Geoparks WA with support from the Peel Development Commission and other key stakeholders. The initiative highlights internationally significant wetlands, waterways, and landforms, including the renowned Lake Clifton Thrombolites, often considered the region's crown jewel. Additionally, it incorporates Bindjareb Noongar knowledge to help people better understand what makes this region truly special.

The launch has been praised as a significant step forward in establishing geoparks in Western Australia and advancing the Peel region towards UNESCO Global Geopark designation. This follows the introduction of the Peel Geodrive Trail in 2024, which was developed after local geologist and Salt and Bush Eco Tours owner Sebastian Jones assessed approximately 30 sites for their alignment with UNESCO criteria, focusing on abiotic, biotic, and cultural heritage values.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

Peel Development Commission chair Myri Riddy emphasized the commission's goal to build a network of diverse adventures that attract visitors, foster economic growth, and encourage environmental sustainability. "The Bindjareb Geopark project and development of the trail guide and mobile app demonstrate how strong strategic partnerships between traditional owners, community, tourism organisations and government can help build a regenerative visitor economy that celebrates country, protects the environment and delivers long-term benefits for the Peel region," Riddy stated.

The commission also acknowledged Dr Yifei Ren for contributing his technical expertise on a voluntary basis to the app's development.

Global Geotourism Trends

Geoparks WA vice-president Professor Ross Dowling highlighted the importance of the guide and app launch in the context of global geotourism growth. "Globally, geotourism and geoparks continue to grow as visitors seek deeper understanding of the places they visit," Dowling said. "The Bindjareb Geopark is well placed to meet this demand. We greatly value the partnership with the Peel Development Commission and all geopark working group members who have helped deliver both the Peel Geodrive Trail and the Bindjareb Geopark trail guide and mobile app."

Government Support and Accessibility

Minister for Peel Jessica Stojkovski noted that the Bindjareb Geopark is part of a broader strategy for eco-tourism development. "The trail guide and mobile app have been designed to make the Bindjareb Geopark more accessible to locals and visitors, providing clear and engaging information about key geo sites, landscapes and stories across the region," she explained.

The trail includes 12 key sites and represents the first initiative of its kind in the region, offering an immersive experience that combines education with exploration.
