The funding will be allocated over several years to develop new attractions, improve infrastructure, and extend the festival's duration. Barr stated that the expansion is part of a broader strategy to position Canberra as a must-visit destination for cultural events.
Economic Impact
Floriade, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, contributes significantly to the ACT's tourism sector. The expansion is expected to create jobs, support local businesses, and increase overnight stays. Barr emphasised that the investment would deliver long-term benefits for the community.
The announcement was made during a visit to Commonwealth Park, where preparations for the 2024 festival are underway. Organisers plan to introduce new horticultural displays, entertainment programs, and family-friendly activities as part of the expanded event.
Community leaders have welcomed the funding, noting that Floriade is a cherished tradition that showcases Canberra's natural beauty and cultural vibrancy. The expanded festival is expected to run from September to October, with additional weekend events and evening sessions.
Barr also highlighted the importance of sustainability, with plans to incorporate eco-friendly practices into the festival's operations. This includes waste reduction initiatives, water conservation measures, and the use of renewable energy sources.
The funding announcement comes as part of the ACT government's ongoing commitment to supporting arts and culture. Floriade 2027 is anticipated to be the largest and most diverse edition yet, cementing Canberra's reputation as a hub for festivals and outdoor events.
