Port Kembla's Golden Hour Pilates Opens Jan 24 with Innovative Infrared Heat
New Port Kembla Pilates studio opens with infrared heating

A new Pilates studio promising a uniquely warm experience is set to open its doors in Port Kembla later this month, bringing innovative infrared heating technology and a fresh wellness focus to the Illawarra's evolving industrial heart.

From Law Firm Burnout to Studio Ownership

Golden Hour Pilates will officially launch on January 24, 2026, marking the culmination of a two-year journey for co-owners Chi Nguyen and her partner, engineer Jayden Zafiriou. For Ms Nguyen, the business represents a dramatic career shift. She was previously working a desk job at a law firm while simultaneously studying law before discovering Pilates as an antidote to burnout.

"I just felt really burnt-out, and I found Pilates. It allowed me to be creative," Ms Nguyen explained. "I thought having that peace every day was the best bit of my day, hence Golden Hour Pilates, because it's the best bit of your day." The couple began seriously planning the business last year, navigating the challenges of construction and fitting out their commercial space.

The Secret in the Ceiling: Infrared Heat Technology

The studio's standout feature is its innovative heating system. Instead of conventional methods that warm the air, infrared panels installed in the ceiling directly heat participants and objects within the room.

"Instead of feeling like you're walking into a really hot space, it actually feels like you're walking into a normal room, and then after a few minutes you start to feel a kind of internal heat. It feels like a nice day out at the beach," Ms Nguyen said.

She highlighted multiple benefits of combining infrared heat with Pilates, including improved muscle flexibility due to warmer tissues, increased cardiovascular endurance, and detoxification benefits. "Combining those two together makes for a great hour of your day," she added.

A Strategic Choice: Why Port Kembla?

The decision to establish the studio in Port Kembla was both practical and forward-looking. Ms Nguyen cited more affordable commercial rents compared to neighbouring Wollongong as a key factor, making the venture financially viable.

However, the choice was also strategic, aligning with the area's ongoing transformation. "There's a lot of work being put into Port Kembla at the moment, so we wanted to be there," she stated, referencing projects like the industrial land rezoning and the broader Port Kembla Precinct development.

The owners were also drawn to the suburb's emerging community spirit and street visibility. "We wanted that community feel... and we wanted people to be able to come to our studio, and then go to a cafe up the street, go do their grocery shopping," Ms Nguyen said, noting the supportive local business network they aim to join.

With a soft launch already generating local interest and trial sessions underway, the owners are eagerly anticipating their official opening. "It feels a little bit surreal," Ms Nguyen admitted. "Now that we finally have a date, I'm so excited." The studio represents not just a new business, but a personal transformation and a vote of confidence in Port Kembla's future as a vibrant, multi-use suburb.
