Private Developer Installs Vehicle Monitoring Cameras at Yanchep Estate
A private developer has taken the initiative to install automatic number plate recognition cameras at a new housing estate in Yanchep, located approximately 40 minutes north of Perth's central business district. This move is part of a collaborative effort with Western Australia Police to bolster community safety in the rapidly growing northern suburbs.
Enhancing Safety Through Technology
Parcel Property, the residential property development company behind the Indi estate, has funded the installation of these advanced cameras. The technology is designed to capture detailed vehicle and number plate movements, providing real-time data to law enforcement agencies. It is anticipated that this system will significantly improve community safety by assisting police in locating missing persons and identifying vehicles associated with criminal activities, such as stolen cars.
Acting Inspector Blake Henry from the State Operations Command of WA Police emphasized the importance of this addition to the existing network. "Connecting the new Yanchep housing estate to the wider ANPR network gives police an additional tool to help protect the community," he stated. "If a vehicle of interest enters the area, the ANPR system will alert police who can assess the incident and allocate the appropriate response."
Expanding the ANPR Network
WA Police currently have access to over 600 ANPR cameras across the state, which collectively generate around 23 million reads each week. A spokesperson for the police force highlighted the effectiveness of this technology, noting that it is "one of the many powerful tools police utilise to solve crime faster than ever before." The spokesperson added, "This technology has assisted police to rapidly locate serious high-harm offenders, respond to criminal offences, and locate at-risk members of the community for whom police hold welfare concerns."
Inspector Henry further commented on the collaborative nature of the project, stating, "It is a strong example of how developers and police can work together to support safer neighbourhoods. Every additional ANPR site strengthens the network across WA and helps police respond to calls for help from the community."
Proactive Community Safety Measures
Jeremy Cordina, General Manager of Parcel Property, explained that the decision to fund the camera was driven by a proactive approach to community safety. "As the estate continues to grow and more residents move into the area, this technology will provide an additional layer of reassurance," he said. Cordina also indicated that this installation is just the beginning, with more ANPR cameras potentially being rolled out by the company in the future.
"When we reviewed statistics showing ANPR technology's effectiveness in improving safety and deterring crime, the decision was an easy one," Cordina remarked. "We are proud to introduce Indi Yanchep as the first Parcel Property-funded ANPR camera, and it certainly will not be the last."
The installation at Yanchep's Indi estate represents a significant step in leveraging technology to enhance public safety, demonstrating how private sector initiatives can complement law enforcement efforts to create safer communities.
