FDA Upgrades Potato Chip Recall to Highest Alert Level

FDA Issues Class 1 Recall for Popular Potato Chip Brands

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated a recall of several popular potato chip brands to its most serious classification due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall, initially issued voluntarily by manufacturer Utz in May, now carries a Class 1 designation, the highest level of alert.

An estimated 650,000 bags of chips, with best-by dates ranging from July 27 to August 31, are believed to be affected. The affected products include Zapp's Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips in various sizes, Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, Zapp's Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chips, Zapp's Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chips, and Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips.

Reason for Recall: Contaminated Dry Milk Powder

Utz issued the voluntary recall after discovering that dry milk powder sourced from a third-party supplier, used in a seasoning ingredient, might contain salmonella. The company stated in a May 5 press release that no salmonella had been found in its products and no illnesses had been reported, but the recall was conducted out of "an abundance of caution."

According to Utz, "To date, there have been no complaints of illness reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products. Utz is recalling these products based on the ingredient supplier's recall."

Class 1 Recall: What It Means

The FDA's Class 1 classification is reserved for situations where there is a reasonable probability that exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. The agency's weekly enforcement report, published Friday, did not elaborate on why the recall warranted this highest level, leaving consumers and experts speculating about the potential risk.

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that causes foodborne illness, accounting for about one in four diarrheal diseases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Symptoms of infection typically include sudden fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, and occasionally vomiting.

Consumer Guidance and Refunds

Utz has urged consumers who purchased the affected products not to eat them and to discard any remaining chips. The company also advised customers to contact Utz for a refund. The FDA's report did not provide new information beyond the initial recall announcement, and Utz's website currently features no updates beyond the May press release.

The affected products are: Zapp's Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips (1.5oz, 2.5oz, 8oz), Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (2oz), Zapp's Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (1.5oz), Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chip (2oz), Zapp's Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip (2.5oz, 8oz), and Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips (2oz).
