The contract for a new multi-deck carpark at the Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct has been awarded, aiming to alleviate anticipated parking shortages. The 515-bay facility at Lot 120 Barry Marshall Parade will be privately developed by Human Urban and constructed by PACT.
Location and Timeline
Situated near the precinct entrance, vehicle access will be via Wonnul Place. Site works commence in August, with the carpark expected to become operational in late 2027.
Additional Parking Developments
A separate western multi-deck carpark, providing about 1,500 staff bays, is being built by Georgio Group on the corner of Jennalup Street and Winch Way as part of the new Women and Babies Hospital project. This facility is slated to open in mid-2027. To bridge the gap during construction, three temporary staff carparks will open at Wonnul Place, Murdoch University, and Bibra Drive.
Impact on Healthcare Workers
Approximately 1,000 health workers are expected to lose their parking spots when work on the hospital begins. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti stated the multi-deck carpark will help futureproof the precinct and relieve parking pressure for patients, staff, and visitors.
Government and Local Support
Health Minister Meredith Hammat emphasized the precinct's status as one of the busiest and fastest-growing in Western Australia. “Ensuring patients, visitors and our healthcare workforce can access our hospitals safely and efficiently is an important part of delivering quality care,” she said. “This additional parking capacity will support the expanding precinct as we progress construction of the new Women and Babies Hospital, helping ensure the infrastructure around our hospitals keeps pace with the increasing demand for health services.”
The City of Melville supported the carpark when it was considered last year. City statutory planning manager Kate Bainbridge noted a “significant” car parking problem in the area, especially with new projects such as the hospital. “We’ll continue to see car parking pressure in this precinct until such time as we have more public transport and more residents hopefully in that area in the future,” she said.
