Canberra plumbers are lifting the lid on the most common hidden plumbing faults lurking in local homes, warning that many issues go undetected until they cause significant damage and expense. According to industry experts, simple problems like dripping taps and slow drains can escalate into major repairs if left unchecked.
Common Hidden Faults Exposed
Master Plumbers Canberra spokesperson John Smith said that one of the most frequent unseen issues is leaking taps. "A tap that drips once per second can waste over 11,000 litres of water a year, adding hundreds of dollars to water bills," Smith explained. He added that many homeowners ignore the drip, not realising the long-term cost.
Another common fault is blocked drains caused by grease, hair, and debris buildup. "People often use chemical drain cleaners, but these can damage pipes over time," Smith said. Instead, he recommends regular professional inspections to catch blockages early.
Hidden Leaks and Water Damage
Concealed leaks behind walls or under floors are particularly problematic. "We often find leaks that have been running for months, causing mould and structural damage," Smith noted. A small leak can waste up to 90 litres of water per day, potentially leading to thousands of dollars in repairs.
To detect these leaks, plumbers use thermal imaging cameras and acoustic listening devices. "Regular checks, especially in older homes, can save homeowners from unexpected bills," Smith advised.
Toilet and Hot Water System Issues
Running toilets are another hidden culprit. A faulty valve can waste up to 200 litres of water daily. "A simple $10 part can fix the issue, but many people don't notice because the toilet still flushes," Smith said.
Hot water systems also develop faults that are not immediately obvious. Sediment buildup can reduce efficiency and lead to premature failure. "We recommend flushing the system annually to extend its life," Smith added.
Preventive Measures and Costs
Smith emphasised the importance of preventive plumbing inspections. "A $200 inspection can identify issues that could cost $5,000 to fix later," he said. He advises homeowners to check for signs like damp patches, unexplained water bills, and low water pressure.
