Northern Perth's First Costoo in Alkimos Edges Closer to Opening

Plans for the inaugural Costco north of the river in Perth are advancing, with detailed development applications now open for public comment. This move brings the proposed Alkimos store, which will be the city's third Costco location, one step closer to reality.

Store Details and Operational Hours

The Alkimos Costco will cover an impressive 14,234 square meters, slightly larger than its counterpart at Perth Airport. Situated on Romeo Road, just over one kilometer southeast of the suburb's train station, the store is designed to operate with extended hours: from 10am to 8:30pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 6:30pm on Saturdays, and 10am to 6pm on Sundays. It will feature 870 parking bays to accommodate shoppers.

Additional Services and Employment Opportunities

Beyond the main retail space, the development includes a Costco fuel station in the northeast corner, operating strictly as a petrol-filling station without a convenience store. The store will also house various specialty services such as a sushi bar, bakery, rotisserie, optometrist, and hearing aid services. A vehicle tyre repair and fitting centre will be integrated within the complex. Once operational, the store is expected to employ approximately 250 staff members, boosting local employment.

Background and Strategic Location

Costco, a global discount retailer founded in America and operating on a membership-only model, offers bulk goods including groceries, liquor, furniture, electronics, and more. The company opened its first Australian store in 2009, with Perth locations at Perth Airport in March 2020 and Casuarina in December 2022. The Alkimos store will anchor the new 24-hectare Home X Trade Hub, where the government recently sought expressions of interest for 17 additional commercial lots.

Community Impact and Future Growth

Chris Tingman, Costco's country manager for Australia and New Zealand, highlighted Alkimos as a dynamic and fast-growing suburb, making it an ideal fit for the company's expansion north of the river. With Alkimos' population projected to exceed 45,000 residents by 2035, Costco will join other commercial developments in the rapidly growing northern corridor, such as the approved Alkimos Local Shopping Centre featuring a supermarket, childcare centre, and cafes.

Public Consultation Process

Public consultation on the development plans is currently open through the City of Wanneroo until Friday, March 13. Following this period, the Metro Outer Development Assessment Panel will review and determine the application, marking a critical step in the approval process.
