Albion Park Bypass Moves Forward with Finalised Designs to Combat Gridlock

Motorists in Albion Park are one step closer to bidding farewell to chronic road congestion as the final designs for the Tripoli Way extension, commonly referred to as the Albion Park bypass, have been officially completed. This critical infrastructure project aims to alleviate traffic pressures by allowing drivers to access the motorway without navigating through the Albion Park central business district, thereby freeing up local roads for community use.

Project Details and Political Backing

The two-kilometre road corridor includes a 30-metre bridge spanning Hazelton Creek and features four lanes connecting Terry Street to Moles Street. This initiative became a focal point during the 2023 NSW election, with both major political parties committing to funding. The promise was reaffirmed in the 2025 Kiama byelection, which saw Labor's Katelin McInerney secure victory, further solidifying support for the project.

Minister for the Illawarra, Ryan Park, hailed the completion as a significant milestone, stating, "This project will ease congestion and take pressure off our roads while ensuring our region remains well-connected." Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison, who announced the design finalisation, emphasised the community benefits, saying, "This is a great day for the communities of Albion Park and Calderwood." She credited Ms. McInerney for her advocacy, which helped secure a $40 million investment from the NSW Government.

Community Impact and Future Steps

Katelin McInerney, Member for Kiama, expressed her commitment to keeping the project on schedule, with construction slated to commence later this year. She noted, "This is a major step forward for our community, and our people in Albion Park, Calderwood, and Tullimbar have been waiting a long time to see this." Ms. McInerney highlighted the project's role in improving road safety and easing daily commutes for residents affected by congestion.

The Albion Park bypass is expected to transform local traffic flow, reducing bottlenecks and enhancing connectivity across the Illawarra region. As plans move into the construction phase, stakeholders remain optimistic about the long-term benefits for both motorists and the broader community.
