Revised Plans for Northbourne Avenue
An arts group in Canberra has significantly altered its development proposal for Northbourne Avenue, adding 100 apartments to the project. The revised plan aims to generate additional revenue to support the creation of a new cultural precinct and gallery space. The development, originally approved in 2020, now includes a total of 350 apartments, up from the initial 250.
Funding the Cultural Precinct
The increased residential component is designed to cross-subsidise the arts facilities, which will include a 1,000-square-metre gallery and a public art space. According to the group's director, the additional apartments are essential to make the project financially viable. "Without the extra residential units, we simply couldn't afford to deliver the high-quality cultural amenities the community deserves," they said.
Community and Council Response
The revised plans have been submitted to the ACT government for assessment. Local residents and businesses have expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the boost to housing supply and others concerned about increased density. The arts group has emphasised its commitment to maintaining green spaces and ensuring the development integrates well with the surrounding neighbourhood.
Timeline and Next Steps
If approved, construction could begin in early 2025, with completion expected by 2027. The group plans to hold community consultation sessions in the coming weeks to address any concerns and gather feedback on the updated proposal.
