Pro Surfer Ryan Callinan's Family Home Sells at Auction in Merewether
The childhood residence of Newcastle-born professional surfer Ryan Callinan has been sold at auction in Merewether, concluding more than four decades of ownership by the Callinan family. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 20 Ranclaud Street attracted significant interest, ultimately selling under the hammer for $2.269 million.
Competitive Bidding Drives Sale Price Above Expectations
Listing agent Mitchel Ross of Christie's International Real Estate reported that ten registered bidders, all local, participated in the auction. The event opened with a bid of $1.7 million, quickly climbing to $1.8 million, and after over twenty additional bids, the property sold for well above its $2.1 million guide price. A family from New Lambton emerged as the successful buyers, fulfilling their long-held desire to move closer to the beach.
"It was a very competitive auction," Mr Ross said. "I initially had five or six buyers registered, so to have ten on the day was above expectations. The beachside location and price point drove the high level of interest."
Family Legacy and Surfing Heritage
For decades, Garry and Janice Callinan, along with their children Ryan, Maddison, and Billie, resided in the two-storey home, situated just 250 metres from Merewether Beach and the Merewether Ocean Baths. Cotality records indicate the family purchased the 1950s-built property in 1982.
Ryan Callinan, inspired by local surfing legends such as four-time world champion Mark Richards, Luke Egan, and Matt Hoy, honed his skills on the waves at Merewether Beach. He made history as Newcastle's first surfer in over a decade to qualify for the World Surf League Championship Tour in 2016. His father, Garry, who passed away in 2016, was a life member and sponsor of the Merewether Surfboard Club.
Property Market Insights and Additional Sale
According to Cotality, the median house value in Merewether is $2.1 million. Mr Ross noted that a recently sold property across the road, on a larger block and freshly renovated, fetched $2.15 million, making the sale price of the Callinan home particularly impressive. "There were a lot of families that saw a good opportunity to make a beautiful house near the beach for a reasonable price," he added.
In a related transaction, Mr Ross also auctioned a renovation project at 90 Kenrick Street, Merewether, led by Newcastle artist Mitch Revs and his wife Emily. Listed with a guide of $2.9 million, the four-bedroom, three-bathroom California bungalow sold to a young family from Hamilton for an undisclosed price, believed to be around $3 million. Cotality records show the property previously sold in December 2024 for $2.01 million, marking the couple's third successful flip project since 2022.
The sale of Ryan Callinan's family home marks the end of an era, transitioning a piece of Newcastle's surfing history to new owners while highlighting the robust demand for beachside properties in the Merewether area.
