A serious crash on the Kwinana Freeway in Perth caused significant traffic congestion and disrupted train services for several hours on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1pm just south of the North Lake and Armadale Road interchange, involving a car and a truck.
Southbound traffic on the freeway was heavily impacted, with queues stretching almost 8 kilometres and coming to a standstill through Jandakot and Cockburn. The crash damaged rail infrastructure in the freeway median, leading to the cancellation of Mandurah line train services in both directions for several hours.
Transperth announced just before 6pm that Mandurah line services had resumed between Elizabeth Quay and Rockingham, though not to the usual timetable. The Thornlie-Cockburn Line was also down for a short period but later resumed operations. Train replacement buses ran between Elizabeth Quay and Aubin Grove, with extensive queues reported at some stops.
Main Roads WA confirmed the crash had been cleared by just before 5pm, but train services remained affected. The driver of the car, a woman in her 60s, escaped with non-life threatening injuries. The white car was extensively damaged, and a large set of wheels from the truck's trailer became detached.
The damage to rail lines brought more than 10 workers to the scene, with power lines above the tracks appearing to have been damaged. The cancelled Mandurah line services impacted travel for attendees of the AC/DC concert at Perth Stadium that evening.
