More Canberrans are being pushed to the edge as rising housing costs leave many just one setback away from crisis. For Claire, that moment came when she left a situation shaped by domestic violence, determined to build a safer future for herself and her young son. For more than two years, they lived in a caravan, navigating rising living costs and the daily reality of not having a stable home.
With support from St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn, Claire began to find a way forward. The organisation's Family Services team provided tailored support to help navigate housing pathways and work towards long-term stability. Emergency relief, including groceries and fuel vouchers, helped during periods of immediate need.
Support also extended to Claire's son, connecting him with services to support his development and prepare him for school. Now, after more than two years without stable housing, Claire and her son are preparing to move into a safe, permanent home. For Claire, it represents a fresh start and a foundation to focus on her health, return to work, and build a stable future.
As winter approaches, stories like Claire's are becoming increasingly common. The Vinnies Winter Appeal helps ensure support is available when needed most, providing practical assistance and long-term pathways. Donations of $2 or more made before June 30 are tax deductible.
