ABS Hiring 30,000 Workers for 2026 Census

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is embarking on a major recruitment drive, seeking to build a workforce of 30,000 personnel for the 2026 Census, scheduled for August. The census provides a comprehensive snapshot of the nation and its evolving demographics, informing critical decisions on education, healthcare, transport, and infrastructure.

Why the Census Matters

Conducted every five years, the census is compulsory for all individuals in Australia, including international students, visitors, visa holders, and infants. An ABS spokesperson emphasised the significance of the census, stating, "The Census is the largest data collection in Australia and provides some of the country's most valuable statistics. Only a Census can provide rich data for the entire country, including small geographic areas and small population groups. It gives unique insights that no other datasets can provide."

Available Roles and Pay Rates

The ABS is currently recruiting for short-term casual positions across the country. These roles include delivering census letters, answering public inquiries, and managing small teams. Field officers, who provide ground support by distributing forms and following up with non-respondents, earn a casual rate of $31.19 per hour, plus superannuation. Higher-paying roles include field managers at $42.65 per hour, remote area team leaders at $55.81 per hour, and engagement managers at $61.50 per hour.

"For the Census to produce high quality data we need to find every dwelling in Australia, no matter where it is," the ABS said. "This includes in big cities, regional centres and Australia's most remote locations, as well as places like cruise ships and offshore oil rigs in Australian waters — we need to count everyone, and we need people across the country to help us do that." This extends to Norfolk Island, a tiny external Australian territory in the South Pacific, where a team of four field officers is needed to guide the population of 2,200 people.

Digital-First Approach

The ABS is adopting a digital-first strategy for the 2026 Census, anticipating that 85% of Australians will complete the survey online. Paper forms will still be available for those who prefer them. Additionally, the ABS is partnering with Services Australia to enable myGov as another option for receiving updates and accessing the survey. Individuals who subscribe to census updates through myGov will receive a link to the online form in their myGov Inbox when it is time to complete the survey.

The 2026 Census will be held on Tuesday, August 11.
