Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Unveils Major Fuel Supply Agreement
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a significant fuel deal designed to secure additional supply for Australia, with a particular emphasis on addressing shortages in regional areas. Speaking at the Lytton Ampol refinery in Brisbane on Thursday morning, Albanese revealed a new agreement between the federal government, Ampol, and Viva Energy. This pact will enable the companies to import fuel from countries they do not typically source from, thereby enhancing national fuel security.
Government-Brokered Deal to Direct Fuel Distribution
The deal, facilitated through Export Finance Australia, will allow the two largest fuel suppliers in the country to bring in extra supply. A key aspect of this arrangement is that the government will have the authority to direct where this fuel is allocated, ensuring it reaches the most critical areas. Albanese emphasized that this initiative represents a departure from standard business practices, as it introduces additional supply into the Australian market.
He stated, "Today, I can announce that Export Finance Australia have agreed to terms with our two largest suppliers, Viva Energy, based in Geelong, and Ampol, based right here, to enable them to bring more fuel to Australia. This is not business as usual. Importantly, this is additional supply here in Australia that they will be able to source."
Focus on Regional Australia and Supply Chain Challenges
Albanese highlighted that the agreement is specifically tailored to support regional Australia, where fuel shortages have been particularly pressing. He explained, "As part of this agreement, of course, the government can direct where that supply goes, particularly going to regional Australia and areas that are under pressure in terms of supply." While he did not specify the exact countries targeted for imports, the federal government has previously excluded Russia as a source, adhering to international sanctions and ethical considerations.
Additionally, Albanese warned that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East continue to pose risks to global supply chains, regardless of developments in key shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that stabilizing the situation will take time, even if conditions improve, underscoring the importance of proactive measures like this deal.
Future Steps and International Engagement
Following the announcement, Prime Minister Albanese is set to travel to Singapore to pursue further fuel supply agreements, aiming to bolster Australia's energy resilience. This move aligns with broader efforts to mitigate the impact of global disruptions and ensure a steady flow of essential resources. The deal with Ampol and Viva Energy marks a critical step in addressing immediate supply concerns while laying groundwork for long-term fuel security strategies.
