Wollongong could soon welcome a new kind of hospitality service – not for tourists, but for businesses and investors looking to call the city home.
The Wollongong City Council is exploring the creation of a dedicated 'city concierge' as part of its draft Economic Development Strategy, a forward-thinking plan designed to shape the region's prosperity over the coming decade.
Beyond tourism: A concierge for business growth
This wouldn't be your typical hotel concierge recommending local cafes. The proposed service would act as a single point of contact, streamlining the process for businesses to establish and expand their operations in the Illawarra.
The concierge would serve as a centralised resource, helping to navigate council processes, connect with local suppliers, and access vital support services. The goal is to make Wollongong an even more attractive and business-friendly destination.
A strategy for a thriving future
The draft strategy, which was presented to councillors this week, outlines a vision for a diverse and resilient local economy. The city concierge concept is just one of several innovative ideas aimed at:
- Attracting new investment and high-value industries
- Supporting the growth of existing local businesses
- Creating sustainable job opportunities for residents
- Enhancing Wollongong's reputation as a hub for innovation
Council staff have been directed to prepare a detailed report on the feasibility of the concierge model, examining how similar services have succeeded in other Australian regions.
Community input shapes the vision
The development of this strategy hasn't happened in a vacuum. The council engaged extensively with the community and local business leaders to identify key priorities and challenges.
"This is about building an economy that works for everyone in Wollongong," a council spokesperson noted. "We're looking at practical, proactive measures that can make a real difference to our city's future."
The proposed economic strategy will be open for public exhibition, giving residents and business owners a final opportunity to have their say before it is formally adopted.
